Birth: May 1893 Camden Park, Menangle, NSW, Australia Death: 2 Apr 1917 (age 23) Louverval, France, Killed in Action Cemetery or Memorial: Villers Bretonneux, France Father: Edward WILLIAMS (abt 1863 - 18 March 1946) Mother: Mary Evelina (abt 1866 - 22 November 1947) John was educated at Cleveland Street Public School Sydney. His occupation was Horticulturist when he enlisted in May 1915 at Camden and served in the 20th and 56th Battalion A.I.F. He departed Sydney on the 'Seuvic' 20 December 1915 and arrived in France via Egypt on 29 June 1916. The chateau at Louverval, France was taken by 56th Australian Infantry Battalion at dawn on 2 April 1917. The hamlet stayed in Allied hands until the 51st (Highland) Division was driven from it on 21 March 1918 during the great German advance, and it was retaken in the following September. Lance Corporal John Edward WILLIAMS was killed in action during the offensive at Louverval on 2 April 1917 age 23. |
